A comprehensive annual health check is one of the highest-value things you can do for your long-term wellbeing. The problem is that in the US and UK, a truly thorough private check-up — one that goes beyond a basic GP visit and includes advanced blood work, imaging, and specialist review — costs anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000 out of pocket.

At DocDocDash partner clinics in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, equivalent packages start from $180 to $650. This guide breaks down what you actually get in each context.

What a comprehensive health check should include

A meaningful annual health check isn’t a GP appointment. At minimum, a thorough check-up should cover:

Blood work: Full blood count, metabolic panel, lipid panel, thyroid function (T3, T4, TSH), blood glucose (fasting), HbA1c, liver function tests, kidney function tests, uric acid, iron studies, vitamin B12, vitamin D.

Cardiovascular: Blood pressure, resting ECG (electrocardiogram), and ideally a cardiac stress test for patients over 40 or with risk factors.

Cancer markers: PSA (for men over 40), tumour markers (CEA, AFP, CA-125 where appropriate), faecal occult blood test.

Imaging: Chest X-ray, ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis.

Specialist consultations: At minimum, an internal medicine physician review of all results. Ophthalmology, dental, and dermatology screenings are included in premium packages at many Asian clinics.

Additional for women: Mammogram, cervical smear (Pap test), bone density scan (for patients over 45 or with risk factors).

What this costs in the US and UK

In the United States, a comprehensive private health check of this scope — outside of insurance — typically costs $3,000–$8,000. Many items aren’t covered by insurance unless there is a specific clinical indication, which means preventive imaging and panels are often out-of-pocket even for insured patients.

In the United Kingdom, the NHS offers a free NHS Health Check for patients aged 40–74, but it covers only a limited set of markers and does not include imaging. A comprehensive private health check through Bupa, Nuffield Health, or a private GP costs £800–£2,500 ($1,000–$3,200).

Singapore: premium precision medicine

Singapore’s healthcare system is ranked among the best in the world. Hospitals like Mount Elizabeth, Gleneagles, and Raffles Medical serve a large base of international health-check patients with efficient, English-language programmes.

What you get: Singapore packages are typically the most comprehensive, with highly standardised protocols and cutting-edge imaging technology. Results are reviewed by senior consultants, and packages include detailed written summaries with follow-up recommendations.

Who it’s for: Patients who want the gold standard in diagnostics, particularly those with complex histories or who want advanced imaging (e.g. CT coronary angiography, PET scans) included.

Malaysia: affordable excellence

Kuala Lumpur’s private hospital sector — led by Gleneagles, Prince Court, and Sunway Medical — has built a strong reputation for high-quality care at significantly lower prices than Singapore. Halal-friendly facilities are widely available.

What you get: Malaysia offers packages comparable in scope to Singapore at 30–50% lower cost. International patient centres at major hospitals offer translation services, dedicated coordinators, and same-day results in many cases.

Who it’s for: Patients who want a thorough, internationally accredited check-up at accessible pricing, particularly those combining a health check with a longer holiday.

Thailand: highest volume, lowest prices

Bangkok’s private hospital sector handles more medical tourists than any other city in Asia. Hospitals like Bumrungrad International and Samitivej have decades of experience with international health-check patients and streamlined programmes specifically designed for visitors.

What you get: Thailand offers the widest range of package options and the lowest starting prices. Quality at JCI-accredited facilities is high, though packages tend to be slightly less comprehensive in their specialist review component than Singapore at equivalent price points.

Who it’s for: Patients combining a health check with dental or other treatment, and those looking for the most affordable entry point to comprehensive preventive care.

Is it worth travelling for a check-up?

The maths work if you’re already travelling to Asia for another reason — a holiday, a family visit, or another treatment. A comprehensive check-up adds one day to your itinerary and costs a fraction of what you’d pay at home.

Even as a standalone trip, patients who travel specifically for a health check typically save enough to cover flights and accommodation while returning home with significantly better health data than a routine GP visit would provide.

What Dash AI does: When you tell Dash AI you’re interested in a health check, it asks about your age, risk factors, and any specific concerns — then recommends the package and clinic that best matches your needs, at transparent pricing. You can compare options side by side, see exactly what’s included, and confirm your booking in a single conversation.
